Hard-working headteacher Philip Mantell has said an emotional farewell to Collaton St Mary Primary School.Mr Mantell is moving on to St Marychurch Primary School having spent 20 years at Collaton.

Governors, staff and children gave Mr Mantell a variety of presents in appreciation of his leadership skills. Among the Paignton school's achievements during Mr Mantell's time there was the move to its current site in 2001-02 and glowing praise from Ofsted.

Mr Mantell, 54, said: "It's been a wonderful 20 years. We've achieved a lot, particularly the move to the new site. It's been good to see that get established.

"I felt now was the time to leave. I'm ready for a new challenge and the school is well placed for a bright future.

"I'm proud of what's been achieved here. The governors, staff and children have pulled together as a team. That's just one of the positive memories I will take away with me.
"I was given an absolutely tremendous send-off. On the Friday I was showered with gifts and cards. They're very supportive of their headteachers.

"I can honestly say I've been very privileged to work with some wonderful staff, children and governors, who've given me the freedom to get on and do things."
